Not necessarily one to one –underlying ideas

Core idea

Growing up -  tests your imagination. How do you continue to feel alive when you’re being bombarded by screens all day every day?

The big three

  • Emily - Kierkegaard minus religion – fractured, but takes the big “leap” into meaning (yelling that she “believes” - thereby choosing to keep her inner life alive.

  • Abigail - Kant, with heart (Novalis too?) - moral imagination. Love. Blue flower. Heart, soul, etc. “Dead Poets Society” —what makes a life that’s worth living. But she also has some duty (Kant) in her – she acts because it’s morally right.

  • The Beast / IT - post-meaning nihilism -  emptiness posing as “real life.” Counterfeiter of meaning – hollows out. Loves Numbness and forgetting. Defeated by remembering who you are and choosing not to give in.

  •

Cast

  • Ivana -  Nietzsche, misread - pride/wants to matter – but doesn’t self-overcome – points it outward at others and self-destructs

  • The Smortzle - narcissistic Hobbes – power. Theatrical. Really ultimately a proxy (host) for the Beast

  • Frank Needlenose—Novalis on steroids - unbridled imagination/chaos – but some truth there too.

  • Gloria - loyalty – quiet, strength, great best friend.

  • Reggie : sensitive. Dramatic. Big theater.

  • Hank Needlenose - Descartes as a head master-  control, mind cut off from heart – but ultimately actually acting from love.

  • Major Bob & Bobbleheads: moral clarity - practicality.

  • Doris / Doris Tortoise— memory—anchor.

  • Fluffy—courage – has wings can’t fly, until it really matters at end

  • Inzos - Jungian shadow – fear manifested, but weakens if you face it

How world (SV) works:

Wonder - Belief, emotion, memory, feelings, things that make you “human.” Flexible physics. Emily powered (at least her part of this world – because it’s more than just Emily’s) – SV cannot be totally reduced to just her.

Key objects

  • Locket: a shared love - makes things real.

  • The Cane: power – but no moral center

  • The Powder of Life: ultimate choice between becoming real and holding onto meaning. (Being/becoming)

  • The Journal: remembering – resist giving up wonder (Doris)

  • The Blue Flower – everything – the drive - the soul’s spark – wonder, Love. What makes us human.

Takeaway

Sparkle Valley (feeling, wonder) is chosen—over and over. Emily “leaps” —feeling is worth the risk and hurt.
